The Public Defender Office is responsible for providing legal representation to individuals who cannot afford to hire an attorney in criminal cases or civil cases involving possible incarceration.
The Public Defender Office consists of a Chief Public Defender and full-time office staff. All filings and communication for all cases appointed to a Public Defender go through this office.
The Public Defender Office works with contract attorneys that maintain their own separate law practices. These Deputy Public Defenders represent clients in court and answer legal questions outside of court. However, Public Defender cases are managed by the Public Defender Office and not the contract attorney’s private law practice staff.
If you have a court-appointed attorney in your case, you can get answers to your questions or schedule a time to meet with your appointed attorney by contacting the Public Defender Office.
